What We Want - FIT Human Performance
June 24, 2018 –
Yesterday I was at an office and in a cubical I noticed a little frame with a phrase that just about defines all of us. I have mentioned the Law of Thermodynamics several times … and once again the balance of food is revealed to me. This one reminds me that EVERYBODY is often thinking about the necessary evil of eating.
How can food be good for us, and yet so bad for us at the same time? I guess too much of a good thing becomes a bad thing. WE all know it, if your eating too much food and not moving too much … too much weight gain will happen. Period (exclamation point really)! No miracle moves can sculpt a body, no quick fix equipment can reshape your body without effort, and some try quick fix surgery, but without much long term luck.
If you have known me for a while then you know I am a foodie, a big fan of food. Cooking is therapy for me and I do so love my favorites (PIZZA) … but too much of a good thing … not so good for me. I, like many do care about my numerical scale weight, but for me, I am mostly concerned with how healthy I feel and how well I move. Maybe that is true, but the fact of the matter is without keeping my weight down my chances of disease and illness are a heck of a lot greater.
Less than 6 months left until December and since I’m not a teenager, one of my wants (#1.) to lose weight, means I better start pretty soon. Thus the other want (#2) will have to be limited or suspended until further notice. This of course does not tell me to quit eating but instead to cut out all of the junk food and move more. The Law of Thermodynamics – calories out is greater or equal to calories in.
One of the first quotes I can recall hearing is “you can’t have your cake and eat it too.” Some part of this is right on track, but the fact is that I can have my cake and I can eat it too. However I do need to be a realist and account for the (extra) 1,000 calorie chunk of cake, in my daily movement needs. If I do not want that 1/3 of a pound of fat to end up on my love handles, then I better plan to burn an extra 1000 calories, food = energy. Store too much energy and get fat is an easy way to look at it.
Living in denial is eating and eating and eating without moving and moving and moving, period. Seems simple huh. We all know it’s not that easy as restaurants do not have to announce the calorie content of the entre we want. Count on them being over 1000 calories, especially with the butter and sugar added for flavor and appeal. Not claiming to be a chef, but usually the first and last thing in every pan at big restaurants happens to be butter, this makes the food taste and look better. And don’t forget the bread or chips or cocktails before dinner … a very dangerously high energy intake.
We went out with the kids again last week and they get it, they always split an entrée. They read the menu and at times split 2 appetizers instead of spliting one entrée. Good thinking huh?! Sharon and I have started to apply this too, except my side of ribs. Ya, I know… MOOO. I really do love food (I also move a LOT).
Problem solved!! To eat and lose weight, hire a personal trainer. Yes, that is one fix. If you are eating too much and not moving enough then perhaps accountability is the solution! I will tell you what, starting on July 1st FIT will offer a free FIT session for every package that is purchased. I want you to succeed, I want you to be ready for the Holidays, I want you to be happy and healthy. I want your business too, and your friends/family.
In good health,
Bob
