Take A Breath - FIT Human Performance
July 8, 2018 –
I remember a day of snowboarding at Lake Tahoe, CA, driving back into the Bay Area, looking at the smoggy filth surrounding the area I actually lived in and honestly being mortified. That was the air entering my lungs every minute of every day. Ewww. But that was the reality then, and sometimes today I see it when flying into Houston when we travel. The SMOG is a byproduct of our lives and other than a huge wind blowing it somewhere else … I don’t think it will just vanish. Heck, all places on earth with large populations or dense industry will inevitably have a very high incidence of automobile exhaust, chemical fumes (aerosol cans, factory burn-off, fire, and so much more), and large diesel machinery as an example.
We are all culprits and we are all ingesting the filth. Unless you carry an oxygen tank to breath from your lungs are working hard to filter filth. And if you smoke or are around smokers, well then you are really challenging your own personal breathing machine. Your lungs are your friend … take a breath.
Unless you are actively practicing proper breathing or frequently expanding and strengthening your lungs well then they sit there doing one thing, their job. BUT if you are helping them be stronger too and more efficient at really delivering the largest volumes of oxygen then you know you are really getting enough. Ok, try this, take a deep breath. Ah, not bad. Now try a serious breathe like when you yawn … now that’s a full set of lungs expanding! Feels good huh!!
I love a good sneeze! And when my body does the asystematic response, which means my brain is in control not my own effort (similar to shivering or perspiration). After a great big yawn or sneeze I always feel rejuvenated! Love the feeling? Here’s what is happening; Sneezing is a mechanism that your body uses to clear the nose. When foreign matter such as dirt, pollen, smoke, or dust enters the nostrils, the nose may become irritated or tickled. When this happens, your body does what it needs to do to clear the nose — it causes a sneeze. A sneeze is one of your body’s first defenses against invading bacteria and bugs; therefore sneezing is your friend! And, God Bless you! Or gesundheit; ge-sund-heit, are used to wish good health, expecially to one who has just sneezed.
My wife is a reader, loves to read; a great day for her and her Mom would be to be left alone in a library to just read. Ick. Anyway, she found this breathing thing that I’d like to share; http://www.educatingwellness.com/natural-health/breathe-yourself-skinny/
And, here is one of my challenges…wait for it… The ‘breathing test.’ Can you take a mouthful of water and go walk around the block for five minutes while keeping the water in your mouth?
Why? It forces you to breathe with intention and that aids in the oxegenation of your blood and nasal passages. Clear your head, go for it!
In good health,
Bob
