Health & Fitness Journey - FIT Human Performance
March 18, 2018 –
“I want to get into better shape first … before I go visit a Personal Trainer?”
Once in a while I will hear a comment like that when a person has been away from sports or exercise for an extended period of time. Sometimes if they have had an injury and ‘feel they do not want to make it worse’ they can have the same anxiety or issue. Both nonsense of course, but to that person, at that time in their lives, it is a reality and they have conviction for it. Health and fitness can be scary and for many people the decision to begin a fitness or Personal Training program is intimidating.
First of all there is an image issue, certainly you have heard the stories of walking into a gym and finding teenagers, collegiates, or a line-up of singles in spandex lurking about. Well, I wish there was no stigma attached to starting a fitness program when in fact the goal is only about getting into better shape. We all want to look good and feel our best and we all have to start somewhere. But the decision to start that process IS absolutely a big decision.
Secondly there is genuinely a trust issue, do you even trust yourself to know what to do? I mean, where do you start and how hard should you work and how long will it take??? All important questions right? And that leads into the biggest trust issue of all … who do you trust to answer these personal questions? Your Doctor very well spent most of his/her life in a library or classroom. Your ‘really fit’ buddy or skinny neighbor may be enjoying genetics or an amazingly good diet? And then there is the Personal Trainer … did that person just pass an ‘on-line’ exam or is there experience to learn from? All valid and points indeed.
For that person who wants to get into better shape before starting an exercise program, I not only understand but encourage them to take a moment to find out just where they are in their ‘health and fitness journey.’ Get a baseline and find out if they are even ready for exercises that challenge the body towards improvement. The truth is, that some people who desire to start a fitness or even Personal Training program are just not ready, at times there are physical, physiological, or psychological barriers that may interfere with a strenuous fitness regimen. And a qualified professional may need to be involved or directly oversee that goal.
