Handful of Fat - FIT Human Performance
June 30, 2019 –
As I sit here at my computer I happen to notice this soft bulbous feature I don’t remember last year … I just grabbed a handful and I know what it is and where it come from. It is FAT and it is present due to excess calories. Thus, I ate and drank too many calories versus the level of calories I have burned from exercise. Simple, start eating half my portions and double my exercise. That sounds easy, and is practically a guarantee to changing my physical self. Just burn more calories that I consume! Reads easy, but it is not. And once again the definition of ‘The Law of Thermodynamics.’
See, with new restaurants opening all the time, I tell myself that I’ll just go sample a little bite, just to try it out. Once in the door the real ME wants a meal! A Texas sized meal too … not just a sample. And that is another reason many of us have that handful of calories that need to be burned off. Nope, I am not going to blame the restaurant for my appetite. Nor will I blame my wife who happens to be an outstanding cook for stopping me from ‘seconds’ or cleaning her plate when doing the dishes … that’s all me. My handful of calories is my problem. I think it is time to take measures into my own hands. SO LETS MEASURE!!
Here is how it works. Get a cloth tape measure, a pen, and some paper, or use the link for the Waist Measurement Form.
Measure your own midsection and document the measurement. You only lie to yourself, right.
Measure up, document, and date, and now you have that baseline. If you cannot find a tape measure just stop in to F.I.T. and we will use my professional cloth-retracting measurement device.
Here is how the measurement works; take the cloth tape and throw it around your middle. Synch it up at belly button level parallel to the floor. That’s the site, now read the number and write it down. And in 7 days you WILL be a smaller number (use the power of positive thinking) … if you really cannot find a tape just use a string or belt and then measure the same distance with a straight ruler or blade tape measure. Just figure it out!
Commit to an inch. Less than an inch is closer than no change at all and more than the inch is worthy of a reward!! Well, I like rewards.
The body has a few favorite storage areas to retain your excess calories for future use, This challenge however is waist based for ease. The challenge is to chop your servings in half, or like Sharon and I occasionally do, share an entre’ and ask it to be served that way. On some occasions you can eat ½ of the food on your plate and still have another meal to take home. Often we are over-served … another excuse. Ideally eat a healthy meal at home, and self-serve.
If you drink more water, walk daily, take the stairs, park at the back of the parking lot, or just make the perfect effort and come train with me at F.I.T … that is just icing on the cake, or better said, inches off the tape! Patience is a virtue and if that number does not want to change you must remember … our bodies are fat saving machinery and the older we get the harder it is to retrain your body to get rid of excess calories. But, you can! Discipline matters.
If you do not think that muscle and fitness are important at this time in your life, just ask your Orthopedic Surgeon if you ever get hurt. Don’t think injuries will not happen to you just because you are not in a sport? Falls create havoc on the body., and they can happen anywhere, anytime, to anybody! Not a week goes bye where I do not help somebody with injury prevention and/or exercise therapy. I hate to tell you this ,but you are aging, and the muscle and fitness need to be an important part of your daily lifestyle.
The very best way to regain your muscle and fitness is to work on loosing your handful of fat. The additional exercise paired with the portion control is an amazing way to look and feel younger. I have said it before and here it comes again; nothing tastes as good as skinny feels. Now get started with the challenge! Find that tape measure and get that baseline figure to start working on your midline figure.
In good health,
Bob
